Hey all,

So I just did a very simple clean-up of the Prelinger categories:

http://www.archive.org/movies/movieslisting-browse.php?collection=prelinger

There were some duplicate categories with extra spaces in their names, and also some identical categories with slightly different wording (for example, 'Philadelphia, Pennsylvania', and 'Philadelphia, Pa.'), which have been integrated.

We don't have a master category tree for Prelinger, but I think this general subject list actually works quite well. Please reply if you see any other categories that are obviously the same, so need integrating into each other.

Thanks,
Simon.

Great job simplifying the listings! Will there be a posted list of categories from which the uploader will choose, or have I missed one already posted?

What is the "plantatota" category?

Is philadelphia rural (not metropolitan)?

# Philadelphia, Pa.
# Philadelphia, Pa. (metropolitan area)

Also How about a try in open source movies
These groups seemed simmilar to me but there are much more

(Some could be eliminated by striping leading/trailing spaces and removing case in submissions- others were spelling related )

1.
# political
# Politics
# politics
# Politics
# Politics

2.
# exerimental
# experimental
# expiramental

3.
# Activism

4.

5.

6.

7.

I fixed the Philadelphia one in the Prelinger collection, thanks. Open-Source Movies is a _lot_ worse, I agree, but I'm going to reply to FP's comments on that with some suggestions before I wade in - it's easier to fix curated collections where people aren't adding new material which may worsen the problem again :)

Okay thanks I liked the ideas FP posted myself.

However I was thinking that a developer adding features
a) leading/trailing space purge
and/or
b) case conversion

would help stop inadvertant problem entries from being added by new user submissions.

Hopefully making future cleanup problems fewer when you do get into the merge duplicates phase.

Thanks

Ah, yes. This is a feature that I'd like, but unfortunately, I'm not a developer, so we'll have to wait until that gets on their to-do list.

Oddly, almost all of the Prelinger clean-ups didn't fall under that category - but that's probably because Rick is good at spelling/not leaving random spaces :)

I've started clearing some of the repeaters and nonsensical categories out of Open Source Movies. repeaters such as 9-11,9/11,911 should all just be in one category. Also, Categories such as "solutions", "conference" and VERY vague categories have started to be eliminated. Sure it's fun (cough *frank* cough) to create 50,000 categories for the index to detail EVERY LAST ASPECT of your movie, but it's not neccesary.
